Helms Culinary Camp is an innovative learning experience different from other summer camps – and no one will be required to sleep in a tent!

What are your kids doing this summer?

At Helms College we are passionate about teaching culinary arts to aspiring chefs and gourmands. In an effort to share this passion with others, we are offering a summer culinary camp to students seeking the food service industry as a career opportunity, or to those who just want to have a better understanding of how to prepare food. The goal of the week-long Helms College summer camp is to introduce young culinary artists to this fast-growing industry while exposing them to culinary skills including working with a knife, the fabrication of meats, and making sauces and pastas from scratch. During our camp, students take a hands-on approach in the planning and preparation of gourmet meals. This opportunity provides students with knowledge and experience that can only be gained by working with professional chef instructors.

In addition to learning culinary skills that they can carry throughout their life, campers also will receive an introduction to ServSafe, the food and beverage safety training and certificate program administered by the National Restaurant Association.

Other vital culinary elementsm such as an introduction to the Kitchen Brigade System, cooking methods, marinades, traditional stocks and sauces and pasta and sauces will also be part of the camp. In addition, students will be able to learn about yeast in action, types of breads, brioche and pretzel buns  and the fundamentals of creating egg-based desserts.

Each day campers will create and prepare a full lunch and begin prepping for the menu for the following day. Meals they will create include Italian wedding soup, corn and red pepper bisque, Caesar salad and dinner rolls, Coq au vin, potato gnocchi and many more selections to temp the palette and explore various cultures through cooking!
